Introduction to Applied Music

Full Year: 3 credits
Instructor: Music Faculty/Part-Time Instructors

This course is offered to those students new to the Applied Music curriculum and is directed toward those who must fulfill the Basic Musicianship requirement. Yearlong music lessons are available for credit, with each student working privately with his or her instructor for one full period every week. An additional period per week is devoted to the study of the rudiments of music theory, as a class. Those students who play at the intermediate/upper level join their respective ensemble - Chorus, Band, or Orchestra. Those students who are at the beginning/intermediate level join their respective ensemble when able to do so. Applied piano and guitar students meet once a week in their respective performance classes. One public performance in the spring is required to show a measure of accomplishment. Chamber ensemble opportunities also are available to students enrolled in this course. One year of Introduction to Applied Music satisfies the three-term portion of the Arts graduation requirement.

 


Applied Music (1-4)

Full Year: 3 credits

Students who have successfully completed Introduction to Applied Music or passed the Music Program’s Basic Musicianship Exam may take Applied Music.  In this course, each student works with his or her instructor for one and a half periods per week on technique, sight-reading skills, and repertoire. Beyond the first year, as technical skills improve and artistic sensibilities expand, the course will be increasingly challenging.  Two public programs (juries) are required during the year to demonstrate achievement. All Applied Music students are expected to participate in the Orchestra, the Concert Band, or the Chorus. Applied Music piano and guitar students meet once a week in their respective performance classes. Chamber ensemble opportunities are also available to students enrolled in this course. One year of Applied Music satisfies the three-term portion of the Arts graduation requirement.
 
Course numbers will be assigned by Form: Third Form (Applied Music 1), Fourth Form (Applied Music 2), etc.  

 




Applied Music Honors


Full Year: 3 credits
Instructor: Music Faculty/Part-Time Instructors
Prerequisite: Completion of Applied Music and by recommendation of the Director of Music
Arts Fee Schedule applies

This course is offered to those advanced music students who wish to continue in the Music Program at a highly rigorous level and who have satisfied the requirements of Applied Music. It is designed for those music students who have the capacity and inclination to work independently and creatively. In addition to following the Applied Music curriculum, a participant in this course is expected to present a 30-minute solo recital in the Spring Term, perform in Chapel at least once during the school year, and do significant research according to the instrument of study.

Private, year-long instruction is available to all students who want to study music for no credit/no grade. Daily practice is required. Music studied in this course is based on individual needs and abilities and may include a broad spectrum of styles and genre, based on personal interests. A fee is charged for these lessons. As the School retains contracted music teachers annually based on the full academic year registrations received, early withdrawal from these music lessons does not release the family of their financial obligations for the remainder of the academic year.  Students may choose the options of non-credit music lessons for the full academic year, for the Winter and Spring Terms, or for the Spring Term only.
