January, 2010 • The Music Program presents a series of "Grab n Go n Listen" concerts, featuring our Music Faculty, where the SPS community can bring their lunch
and listen to great music making! Here are highlights from performances by Viktoria Tchertchian, violin & Gregg Pauley, piano as well as by our jazz faculty Tom Robinson, piano, Gerry Adams, bass & John Faggiano, drums.

May 10, 2009, 2009 • The SPS Music Program announced the winners of the Keiser Student Music Competition, held May 8 and May 10 in the Music Building. The annual event recognizes the talents of student musicians in four different categories.

April 15, 2009 • Our guests from India met with the Advanced Music Theory students to explain and demonstrate how raga and tala combine to make Indian music. Our thanks to Balkakrishnan Karipalil Sankaran, Nattuvangam; Preethi Mahesh, singer; Sigamani Natarajan, violinist; and Sakthivel Murugananthan Subramanian; mridangam/ indian drum.

 

Imani Winds, one of the most successful young chamber ensembles in the country, held an outreach class Friday morning, February 6, 2009 for the students and faculty at St. Paul’s School.  The program was called “Rhythm and Song- the influence of the African Diaspora on classical music.” That evening, Imani Winds presented a full–length concert, to an overflowing hall, as part of the School’s Keiser Concert Series.
On Sunday, December 14, 2008, the London Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Daniel Harding, performed the world premiere of “Helios Choros II”, written by Augusta Read Thomas ’82. The concert, which took place at the Barbican, London, UK, was preceded by a reception organized by the SPS Alumni Association to honor the esteemed composer and SPS alumna. Ms. Thomas is a world-renowned composer who was Composer -in-Residence with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra from 1997-2006.

This music was commissioned by the London Symphony Orchestra and the Boston
Symphony Orchestra, with generous support of Martin Mellish, ’75.
September 29, 2008 • David Kim, concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and pianist Natalie Zhu work with SPS students the day after their standing room only Keiser performance.
The Music Program has recently set up a state of the art recording studio in the Music Building's upper studio. Based around a Macintosh computer, the studio enables students to record everything from demos to full CD projects. For more information, see the Student Composition page.
   

February 2008 •
The Music Program has aquired a new set of Roland V-drums, electronic - MIDI capable drums. Users can select from a number of different drumsets at the push of a button, and can record into a computer via audio and MIDI inputs, as well as use them to practice (quietly!)

January 18, 2008 • The Apple Hill Chamber Players have just ended their day long residency at SPS. They spent the day working with our string and piano students, as well as our chamber ensembles, in master class settings. The culmination of their visit was a passionate and exciting concert of Franck and Beethoven.

Ladysmith January 15, 2008 • South African a cappella group Ladysmith Black Mambazo visited the school, performing a concert in Mem Hall (in which the faculty and CLC kids were invited on stage) and working with students in an afternoon workshop involving singing and dancing in township style.

June 1, 2007 • The SPS Orchestra premiered Prayer in Celebration, composed by alumna Augusta Read Thomas '82. Ms. Thomas is a tenured professor of music at Northwestern University and Eastman School of Music, and is currently Composer-in -Residence with the Chicago Symphony. Her successes are many as her works have been performed by the Berlin Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, and countless others. Among the many pieces she is currently working on is a piece for the London Symphony Orchestra. At St. Paul's, Ms. Thomas studied applied music in both trumpet and piano, and began her composition studies at the School.
