
Chorus
Full Year: Non-credit
The SPS Chorus is an 80-voice ensemble open by audition in the fall. The group performs for all major School Chapel services and presents concerts in the fall and spring. Chorus fulfills the Applied Music ensemble requirement for voice students.
Orchestra
Full Year: Non-credit
Membership in the SPS Orchestra is by audition. The core of the group consists of approximately 40 string players, supplemented with winds, brass, and percussion for certain works. The Orchestra meets twice weekly and performs several times each year; in Chapel, at Parents Weekend, at the Winter Concert, and at Anniversary. Orchestra fulfills the Applied Music ensemble requirement for string students.
Concert Band
Full Year: Non-credit
This ensemble of 40-50 members rehearses twice weekly and performs at School and for outreach programs. Intermediate skill level on an instrument is the minimum expectation for membership in this group. Concert Band fulfills the Applied Music ensemble requirement for band instrumental students.
Chamber Music
Offered each term: Non-credit
Students are placed in chamber groups according to ability. They have a weekly coaching session with a member of the music faculty and are expected to meet for additional rehearsals. Chamber groups have various opportunities to perform throughout the year.
Jazz Ensemble
Full Year: Non-credit
Prerequisite: Basic instrumental knowledge
The study and performance of jazz styles is incorporated into a yearlong plan so that students may develop a sense of the many styles of jazz as it has evolved over the years. Emphasis is on practical application in a small group of qualified instrumentalists. Membership is by audition.
Madrigal Singers
Full Year: Non-credit
Madrigal Singers is a small a cappella ensemble open by audition to anyone in the SPS Chorus. The group performs at all major Chapel services concerts in the fall and spring and special performances off the grounds.
